3 HUGE mistakes made while grocery shopping

I was making these mistakes for so many years, they are HUGE, but not anymore!  Not only were they huge mistakes on my part, but they affected the health of everyone in my home, including my pets, YIKES!  Here it is in a nutshell.  We are buying and bringing into our home not only dangerous chemicals, but deadly ones as well.  I’ll discuss my top 3 here:

PHTHALATES – This has been called the number 1 chemical enemy because it is everywhere.  It is in cosmetics, body products, household cleaners, fragrances and food packaging and that isn’t a complete list folks.  It is used as a binding agent in products as well as an agent to make plastics flexible.   THE HARM: Phthalates have been linked  to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues.  Do you really want to bring this junk into the home, to your family, or your pets? If you’d like to know more you can click here

FOOD DYES – Food dye is often added to processed foods, condiments and drinks.  Why do they do this? It’s to enhance the appearance, make the appearance more consistent, maintain or improve the appearance, to add color to colorless food, to avoid color loss, and basically just to make things pretty for the consumers eyes.  Would you buy something that was ugly looking to eat or consume?  Probably not.  We are so used to pretty things, that is what we want to see.  It’s all a part of consumer marketing, if it looks pretty it sells! Red dye #40 is one of the most popular and is found in candy baked goods and cosmetics.  It is a petroleum based product and according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Red 40 and other AFCs can cause allergic reactions in some people. Research shows they can also cause hyperactivity in children and immune system tumors in mice. Red 40 contains p-Cresidine, which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says is “reasonably anticipated” to be a human carcinogen. You can read more by clicking here.  According to webmd, it was linked to hyperactivity in a test group of children. Click here if you want to read it

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP aka HFCS – My number 1 reason I include this is not only the health problems it can cause even when used in moderation.  Problems like heart disease, obesity, cancer, dementia, liver failure, tooth decay, and more.  Think about how much that is costing your family for out of pocket expenses, not to mention the skyrocketing healthcare premiums.  Feel free to click and read an article called 5 Reasons High Fructose Corn Syrup Will Kill You .  The only good things being said about HFCS is the Corn Refiners Association and their supporters. HFCS is not natural, it is an industrial food product.  It can contain contaminants like mercury.  One reason to avoid products that contain HFCS is that they are a marker for poor-quality, nutritionally-depleted, processed industrial food full of empty calories and artificial ingredients. Start reading labels folks, it’s in most processed foods, you’d be surprised, even so called healthy items like Yogurt can contain artificial coloring and HFCS.

These are my personal top 3, there are a ton more dangerous products sitting on the store shelves, lurking in your favorite food.  I was so confused, I didn’t have a clue where to start, I did a lot of research over the past 3 years and now I am offering this information to you for FREE!  Yep, just the nuts and bolts you need to begin shopping smarter for you, your family, home and pets.  It’s simple and it’s free.  You’ll get tips, links to useful apps, more information about deadly chemicals that lurk on store shelves and what they do to your energy levels, hormones, and brain drain all in a FREE EMAIL Series.  I’ll keep them short, I promise, just 2-3 minutes a day and you can start feeling better and more confident about your shopping experience.  Learn how you can become a smarter more confident shopper by signing up below.

JESSICA’S CORNER

JESSICA’S CORNER

Hello there!  Welcome to Jessica’s Corner.  I am Jessica, and this is my little corner of Rosalie’s page on Things That Warm the Heart.

So a little about me:  I am a brutally honest, no BS, stay at home mom of three children, one girl and two boys.  We live in the country and all that comes along with that.  No animals though, aside from a few dogs.  We homeschool and that is a big adventure in and of itself!  I’m a lover of good food, staying healthy, and easy “mom-tips” to help me get through the days.  I’m game for products that work, are simple, and safe to use around me and my tribe.

I am so excited that you have stopped by my little slice of the internet and look forward to having some content to make you laugh, and some to get you thinking.  Feel free to contact me to leave any feedback you may have!  Follow me on Instagram for my families daily shenanigans.

One of the things I love to use most are essential oils.  I got started using essential oils many years ago, but I didn’t think they actually worked aside from fragrance.  So when Rosalie got started using Young Living I didn’t give it much thought.  However, after a visit one time, she sent me home with three samples.  The small samples Thieves, Lavender, and Peppermint were lovely I thought, and they smelled amazing but surely they weren’t enough to change my mind.  I set them in my bathroom cabinet, mostly to be forgotten.  And there they sat for quite a while, until there was a nasty bug going around my extended family.  We did not want to catch it, and the Thieves popped into my mind.  I don’t know everything about how it works, but when I used it, it really helped my immune system work better and we didn’t catch the ick.  I used the Lavender to help support healthy skin for my babies.  Now Peppermint is one of my all time favorites just for the smell!  Such a rich, earthy, real plant smell.  No trace of the candy cane farce.  It really wakes up my brain and gets me into GO mode.  It also helped my daughter focus much better during school, and for a pre-schooler, that is huge!  So I looked more into the company to see if I was comfortable using their products more.  And the more I dug, the more I fell in love.  Their Seed to Seal guarantee is worth it’s weight in gold to me.  I also knew that it was not just words on a page, my Aunt had been to one of the farms!  She had touched and smelt and bottled her own bottle and KNEW what was going into it.  Young Living also welcomes all people to tour their farms, and that screams transparency to me.

That brings us to today.  With Young Living I am able to work from home, making a paycheck in between changing diapers, doing dishes, and traveling to visit family.  There is zero pressure too.  I am so in love with the company and even more so with the friendships I have made because of joining.  If you are interested in the product or finding out how working from home is a possibility, please contact me.  If you are skeptical, (as we all are, its okay to admit it) here is the income disclosure for Young Living.  Yes, those are real numbers, and I know people making that.

What? No grain bread??

What? No grain bread??

You cannot be serious, really, a bread without grain?  I finally worked and tried various recipes and I found one that was really good, but it just needed something, so I did a variation, it was good too, but needed something.  I did another variation, and that was even better.  So, which one, hmmmmm?  Well let’s just say I now have 3 very good bread recipes made without wheat flour.

The final variation #2 is my pick for sandwich bread.  You can find the original recipe, and both variations #1 and #2 here.

The original recipe I made using whole eggs and ghee for the oil and it was tasty and buttery, makes great french bread and toast!

Variation #1 was made using coconut oil and just eggs whites, whisked until frothy,  for a lighter more airy bread.  This bread was lighter in texture, taste and color, but the loafs I thought were too small.  We were going through about one every two days.  Yes, we missed bread a lot when we cut wheat out of our diet.

Variation #2 Well, I doubled this recipe and used olive oil, whisked egg whites only and I added honey.  I also turned down the heat a bit to 325 degrees because it was twice the amount and I  without wanted to make sure it got cooked thoroughly without burning.  I had to increase the time as well, up to 50 minutes and it still wasn’t done, but had a nice golden crust on it. I decided to cover it completely to prevent it from getting too brown, and put it back into the oven for another 15 minutes, for a total cooking time of 65 minutes.  Ovens vary so make sure you insert a knife and it comes out clean to be sure.

As you can see in this picture I ended up with a nice golden crusted bread, light and airy.  It tasted really good, too.

Vanilla Cookie – Paleo

Vanilla Cookie – Paleo

2 egg yolks

1/2 cup honey

1/4 cup melted butter or ghee

1 1/2 tsp vanilla

2 cups almond flour, sifted

1/2 tsp sea salt

1/2 tsp baking powder

In a large bowl, combine yolks, honey butter and vanilla.  Stir making sure mixture is completely smooth.  Add almond flour, salt and baking powder.  Mix making sure there are no lumps.  Cover and chill for about an  hour, or overnight is fine too.  Preheat oven to 325 degrees and make balls and place onto cookie sheet or parchment paper.  I quickly take a spatula and flatten them out to about 1/8 inch.  Bake for 15 minutes or until a nice golden brown.

These are a reminder of one of my favorite cookies, Vanilla Wafers.

The Best Body Butter

The Best Body Butter

I don’t know where I got this recipes, I often read several posts and tweak them to make them my own. I’ve spent a couple years experimenting and going through a lot of ingredients, some good and some not so good.  This seems to be the best in my honest opinion.  WHY do I think this one is the best?  Because it is light, fluffy and holds up in even the most hot and humid Southern weather.

Mix equal parts of the following;

  • Shea butter(raw and unrefined is a must)  I get mine on AMAZON, the reason is, that it holds up well and has not been through all the chemical processes of the refined.  I like the texture, the smell and the color of the unrefined one better!  This happens to be my preference.  I use 1/2 Cup
  • Cacao butter, again I use unrefined for the firmness it offers, yet at body temperatures it melts in and spreads wonderfully. I get mine on AMAZON and I like this one the best of any that I’ve tried I use 1/2 Cup
  • Coconut oil, I recommend raw, organic and unrefined like this one.  I use 1/2 Cup
  • A light oil like Sweet Almond, Jojoba or Olive Oil.  I use 1/2 cup
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil.  Use this as a standard for 1/2 cup of the 4 above oils, 2 tsp if you choose to make a huge batch and do 1 cup of each of the oils.  Vitamin E is a natural preservative against bacteria and mold.
  • Essential oils for fragrance and other healthy benefits ( I use these because I am assured of the purity and therapeutic benefits) 10-30 drops if you choose 1/2 cup of each of the butters/oils or double the essential oils if you double the others.  You get it!

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Combine all the butters and oils, except essential oils into a double boiler or a pan set inside of another pan of boiling water on medium heat until all oils are melted.
  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Move to the refrigerator and let cool about another hour, until beginning to harden, but remain somewhat soft.
  • Use a hand mixer, add essential oils, and whip about 10 minutes until fluffy like stiff whip cream.

  • Return to fridge for 10 – 15 minutes to set.
  • I prefer to store in glass jars with a lid.  Stays firm at 75 degrees.  If your home is warmer or very humid it may soften and need to be placed in the fridge, but it will stay whipped at temperatures lower than that.   If for some reason it melts, just whip it up again with the hand mixer and it will be fine.
